Preparing for 2018

As the current year quickly winds down and time races towards the new year, I get the urge to look back over the previous twelve months and reflect on them more deeply. Looking forward, there so many things I must, need, and want to do.

My biggest must do is improve my self-care, mentally and physically. I know the things I need to do but I often neglect them in favor of feeling like crap. It’s much easier to make excuses and feel like crap. I mean, who wants to feel good about themselves, have a better mental state and not feel like a crippled old man?

The biggest need on my list of lists of lists is to be an advocate for myself. I need to speak up and say, “No,” when my plate is too full and to shout, “YES!” to the things that will bring more meaning, happiness and joy into my life.

My want? To improve my hobbies: become a better runner, knit things for my family and friends, read and write more.

Favorite books of 2017

These are my favorite books of the year. I didn’t read near as much as I thought I did…

The Push: A Climber’s Journey of Endurance, Risk, and Going Beyond Limits – I was so excitded for this one, I pre-ordered it when Tommy Caldwell posted about it on his Instagram account.

Binti and Binti: Home – I actually ordered Binti last year some time, but didn’t read it until this autumn. Then as soon as I finished it, I ordered Binti: Home. There is a third book in the series that will be published after the first of the year and I already have it pre-ordered as well.

And the book that took up a lot of my time starting this summer – One Square Inch of Silence: One Man’s Search for Natural Silence in a Noisy World. Wonderful story telling and details. I’m still working on it honestly. It’s a book that deserves your time and attention and should be slowly enjoyed and savored.

Favorite music of 2017

The Temple of I & I by Thievery Corporation – I am fan and will always be one.

Lush Lofi

Chillhop Music – This is “user” is the one I spend most of my work day listening to.

The ever prolific Mr. Lif

Lasting Relationships Rely On 2 Traits – Business Insider

Interesting article, applies to all relationships, not just marriages. We need to pay attention to each other when it’s asked of us. It’s how we make human connections.

In most marriages, levels of satisfaction drop dramatically within the first few years together.

But among couples who not only endure, but live happily together for years and years, the spirit of kindness and generosity guides them forward.
